What Causes Black Streaks on Your Roof (and How to Remove Them)
September 29, 2025 · Restoration Pressure Washing
Drive through almost any Metro Detroit neighborhood and you will spot them: dark, dingy streaks running down otherwise good-looking roofs. Many homeowners assume it is dirt, soot, or just the roof “getting old.” The truth is more specific, and the fix is more straightforward than you might think.
Those Streaks Are Actually Algae
The black staining you see is a type of blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It is airborne, it spreads from rooftop to rooftop, and it feeds on the limestone filler used in many asphalt shingles. Over time it forms dark colonies that streak down your roof, usually starting on the north- and shade-facing slopes where moisture lingers longest.
Michigan gives this algae everything it loves:
- Humid summers and plenty of rain
- Heavy tree cover that keeps roofs shaded and damp
- Long stretches where shingles never fully dry out
That is why a roof here can look weathered well before its shingles are actually worn out.
Why the Streaks Matter
It is not purely cosmetic. As algae spreads, it holds moisture against the shingle surface and can work alongside moss and lichen to wear down the protective granules. Left alone for years, that means a roof that ages faster and looks far older than it is. It also drags down your whole home’s curb appeal, which matters a lot if you are thinking about selling.
Why You Should Never Pressure Wash a Roof
Here is the most important part: do not pressure wash your roof, and do not let anyone else do it either.
Asphalt shingles are coated with mineral granules that protect them from the sun. High-pressure water blasts those granules off, strips years of life from the roof, and can force water up under the shingles where it does not belong. A pressure-washed roof might look clean for a season, but you have traded short-term appearance for long-term damage, and you may have voided your shingle warranty in the process.
If a contractor shows up wanting to put a pressure wand on your roof, send them home.
Soft Washing Is the Safe Fix
The correct method is soft washing. Instead of relying on force, soft washing uses low pressure paired with specialized cleaning solutions that kill the algae at the root.
The difference is significant:
- Low pressure means no granule loss and no lifted shingles.
- The right cleaning solution kills the Gloeocapsa magma rather than just rinsing the surface.
- Results last longer because the algae is treated, not smeared around.
After a proper soft wash, your shingles look like themselves again, and the staining stays gone far longer than a quick rinse would manage. Our roof washing service is built around this gentle, shingle-safe approach.
A Clean Roof Pairs Well With a Clean Home
Roofs are rarely the only surface collecting algae. The same shaded, humid conditions tend to leave green and black growth on siding too. If your roof needs attention, it is often worth refreshing the house washing at the same time so the whole exterior matches and you save a trip.
