Soft Wash vs. Pressure Wash: Which Is Safe for Your Home?
April 8, 2026 · Restoration Pressure Washing
If you’ve ever searched for someone to clean your home’s exterior, you’ve probably seen the terms “pressure washing” and “soft washing” used like they mean the same thing. They don’t — and knowing the difference can be the difference between a beautifully clean home and an expensive repair.
What is pressure washing?
Pressure washing uses a high-pressure stream of water to physically blast dirt, grime, and buildup off a surface. It’s powerful and effective — on the right surfaces. Concrete driveways, sidewalks, and other hard, durable materials can take that kind of force without a problem.
The issue is when high pressure meets a surface that can’t take it. Aimed at siding, it can crack panels and force water underneath, where it causes mold and rot. Aimed at a roof, it strips the protective granules off your shingles and can void your warranty. Aimed at wood, it gouges and splinters the surface.
What is soft washing?
Soft washing uses low pressure — about the force of a garden hose — combined with specialized cleaning solutions. Instead of blasting growth off the surface, the solution kills algae, mold, and mildew at the root, and a gentle rinse carries it away.
The results actually last longer than pressure washing, because you’re not just removing what’s visible — you’re killing the organisms that cause the staining in the first place. It’s the method that siding and roofing manufacturers actually recommend.
So which does my home need?
Here’s the simple rule the pros follow:
- Soft wash — siding (vinyl, aluminum, brick, stucco, painted wood), roofs, screens, painted surfaces, and anything delicate. This covers most of your home, including a full house washing or roof washing.
- Pressure wash (with the right technique) — concrete driveways, sidewalks, and patios. Even here, a pro uses a surface cleaner for an even finish rather than blasting with a wand. See driveway cleaning.
Why it matters in Michigan
Metro Detroit’s humid summers and shaded, tree-heavy lots are perfect conditions for algae and mold to take hold — especially on the north-facing sides of homes. That growth needs to be treated, not just blasted, or it comes right back. Soft washing handles it the right way.
The bottom line
A good exterior cleaning company doesn’t use one method for everything — they match the method to the surface. If someone shows up ready to pressure-wash your siding or roof at full force, that’s a red flag. At Restoration Pressure Washing, we assess every surface and use the safe, correct approach for each one.
